Muzharul Islam (1923-2012) left an indelible mark on Bangladesh’s architectural landscape, revolutionizing the field and introducing modernism to the country. His contributions to architecture and cultural activism made him one of the most eminent and influential architects in South Asia.

Islam’s designs, such as the Fine Arts Institute and the Public Library (now the Dhaka University Library), laid the foundation for modern architecture in East Pakistan. He continued to design a diverse range of buildings and complexes, including laboratories, polytechnic institutes, and even master plans for universities. His emphasis on functionality, simplicity, and technological advancements defined modern architecture in Bangladesh.

Beyond his architectural achievements, Islam was known for his political and cultural activism. He actively participated in social and political movements, advocating for social justice and equality. Collaborating with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he worked on ideas for physical planning, social housing, and integrated villages. His involvement in the NAP (Muzaffar) and establishment of the Chetana Architecture Research Society showcased his commitment to promoting history, culture, and social progress through architecture.

One remarkable aspect of Islam’s career was his role in inviting renowned architects from around the world to contribute to Bangladesh’s architectural landscape. He recommended and worked closely with architects like Louis Kahn and Paul Rudolph, bringing their expertise to the country and enriching its architectural heritage.

Islam’s vision for architecture went beyond aesthetics. He aimed to build a just and decent society, infusing architecture with rationality, ethics, and a sense of social responsibility. He sought to bridge the gap between contemporary practices and Bangladesh’s rich history and traditions.

As we commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Muzharul Islam on December 25, 2023, let us remember his immense contributions to the architectural landscape of Bangladesh. His pioneering work and unwavering commitment to social and cultural progress continue to inspire architects and shape the future of the profession.
