Madhav Achwal, a prominent figure in the field of architecture and education, has made a lasting impact through his contributions. Madhav Achwal’s significance resonates with me as a Punjabi Jatt Sikh, despite his Marathi background. During my final year’s thesis examination at Chandigarh College of Architecture, he served as my external examiner. Our conversation left a profound impression on me as a young student. I may not have fully grasped his professional stature at the time, but I distinctly remember his aura and practical approach in evaluating my thesis on the 'KL Saigal Memorial at Jalandhar.’

Madhav Achwal meticulously reviewed my thesis report, emphasizing key points with a pencil. His attention to detail mirrored that of an exceptional teacher and critic. Rather than linger on the introductory contents, he delved straight into the 'Architect’s Brief,’ where I explained the design inferences and concept. This approach highlighted his professionalism and appreciation for my interpretation and incorporation of elements like humbleness, simplicity, and purity. The 3-D model of the memorial allowed me to showcase the concept of 'building-in-the-garden,’ which Madhav Achwal greatly recognized.

Madhav Achwal’s favorable assessment of my thesis and his recognition of the design approach felt like receiving the esteemed 'Madhav Achwal Gold Medal’ personally. It was a momentous occasion that I will forever cherish.

Born in Kalyan, Maharashtra, Madhav Achwal attended Sir J.J. College of Architecture in Bombay (now Mumbai). Throughout his college years, he excelled academically, particularly in the field of 'Building Construction,’ which earned him the prestigious Mayo Gold Medal in his final year. His exceptional credentials granted him exemption from certain exams, as his answer sheet was recognized as a 'Model’ by the Institute.

In his architectural practice based in Mumbai, Madhav Achwal undertook significant projects in Maharashtra and Gujarat. These projects included small-scale buildings in Mumbai and Vallabh Vidyanagar, Anand. Notably, he designed the Prabhakar Oak Clock Tower in his birthplace of Kalyan. This clock tower, located at Shivaji Chowk, showcases an innovative blend of neoclassical and modern architectural styles. With its triangular plan and three large visible clocks, the tower stands as a remarkable landmark, crowned by a reinforced concrete star-shaped overhang.

Madhav Achwal’s contributions to the field of architecture and education are undeniable. Despite the lack of widespread recognition, his work continues to inspire professionals in the industry, solidifying his status as an icon in his own right.
