    The BBC’s iconic EastEnders set, located in the Elstree complex in Hertfordshire, has been sold to insurance giant Axa as part of the broadcaster’s ongoing efforts to raise funds. The financial details of the deal remain undisclosed. However, the agreement allows the BBC to lease back Albert Square, ensuring the popular TV soap can continue filming at the site.

    The sale of the Elstree Centre site is in line with the BBC’s aim to generate £500m in annual savings. The Chief Financial Officer of the BBC, Alan Dickson, explained that this move is part of the broadcaster’s review of its property portfolio, prioritizing the best value for its license fee payers.

    Despite the change in ownership, the Elstree complex will continue to play a significant role as a production hub. Over the years, it has been the backdrop for various successful TV shows, including Children in Need, Casualty, Holby City, Top of the Pops, and election night broadcasts. However, it is important to note that the separate studio complex, which houses shows like Strictly Come Dancing and movies like Star Wars, is not included in this deal.

    In addition to the EastEnders set, the BBC has also recently sold its Maida Vale music studios and is planning to move out of Wogan House in central London, the current location of Radio 2. These moves are part of the broadcaster’s efforts to optimize its property portfolio and generate cost savings.
